I spent my first few years working in the Chartered Accountancy profession and then I gained a couple of computer qualifications, and went to work in the city as a "Systems Accountant". 

I later ended up in the world of "Financial Advice" (as far as I was concerned, I'd spent all of my life in finance), and I quickly learned the art of "survival of the sharpest mind", showing clients financial solutions, often to problems they didn't even know they had.

After a couple of years at the front line in direct-sales, commission-only, self-employed, I became and "Independent Adviser" (IFA), still working for other employers, but now able to advise on virtually any financial product in the marketplace.

With ten years of IFA experience, I decided to start my own IFA practice in Edinburgh, and concentrate on my own "brand" image.  I "focus" mostly on lump sum investments, and decided to call my business "INVESTMENT FOCUS".

I set up a "parent" company called "Focuswell.com" which is the ONLY dotcom IFA practice in the UK registered by the Financial Services Authority (FSA).  The idea is a "well" of information, focussing on different financial areas.  eg. Investment Focus, Pensions Focus, Mortgages Focus.

Professional Qualifications

LIA (www.lia.co.uk)
The LIA is the UK’s leading association for financial services professionals. With membership of some 23,000 individuals, drawn from every sector of the industry and includes IFAs, appointed and company representatives, financial services managers and supervisors, broker consultants, trainers, compliance officers, paraplanners and administrators.

In 1995 I passed the advanced exams G10 (Taxation & Trusts), G20 (Personal Investment Planning) & G30 (Business Financial Planning).  This advanced qualification gives me the right to use the letters ALIA (dip) after my name, as recognition of being an Associate of the Professional body. In the year 2000, I was the Chairman of the LIA East of Scotland.

MDRT (www.MDRT.org)
The Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) recognises financial professionals by qualification. It is estimated that less than 3% of financial advisers worldwide qualify for membership of this elite body of professionals. 

As a member of this unique and prestigious body, I have been privileged to hear many high quality speakers from all over the world, telling their own inspirational story.  I have heard speakers such as Sir Roger Bannister (world's 1st four-minute mile), Deepak Chopra, Christopher Reeve (AKA Superman).
